Bread is a staple in many households, often shared with our furry companions as a quick snack. But is it actually safe, can dogs eat bread at all? While plain bread isn’t toxic to dogs, it’s not exactly a superfood either. Some types of bread can be harmful, and feeding too much can lead to health issues like obesity or digestive problems.

Before you give into their puppy eyes, read on to learn more about whether bread is good for dogs, how much is safe for them and more!

Is bread good for dogs?

Bread isn’t necessarily good for dogs, but it’s not harmful in small amounts. Plain white or whole wheat bread is safe for most dogs, but it doesn’t offer any real nutritional benefits. It’s mostly empty calories, which can contribute to weight gain if given too often.

Some breads, like those containing whole grains, may offer small amounts of fiber, but dogs get better nutrients from their regular diet.

Is bread bad for dogs?

Bread isn’t bad for dogs in small amounts, but it’s not exactly beneficial either. However there are some scenarios where it could be harmful:

  • Contains flavourings and additives: ingredients like chocolate or xylitol and even excessive salt can be highly toxic to dogs.
  • Contains harmful ingredients: some loaves and buns contain raisins, garlic, onions, nuts and chocolate which are dangerous for dogs to consume.
  • Overconsumption: too much bread can lead to weight gain especially in less active dogs.
  • Allergies: dogs with wheat allergies or gluten sensitivities may experience digestive issues.

Which is why at Petchef, we ensure that all the ingredients that go into our dog food recipes are made of fresh, clean ingredients only! All the meals tailored for dogs contain:

  • 50%+ meat (chicken, buffalo, beef, salmon, tuna, duck, etc)

  • 45%+ vegetables and broth for additional nutrients

  • 3.5% herbs and oils

It’s completely free of preservatives, additives, fillers and grains! If you’d love for your dog to eat the food they were born to eat, come have a chat with our friendly pet nutritionist to find the ideal meal for your pet

An occasional bite of plain bread is fine, but healthier treats are a better choice! Always monitor your dog for any adverse reactions when introducing new foods.

How much bread can a dog eat?

How much bread a dog can eat depends on their size, weight, and overall diet.

Here’s a general guideline:

  • Small dogs: a bite-sized piece (about the size of a thumbnail) is enough.
  • Medium dogs: around half a slice occasionally.
  • Large dogs: up to one whole slice, but not regularly.

You should only give bread in moderation, as part of a balanced diet. Keep it to no more than 5-10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to avoid overfeeding or digestive upset.

How to tell when a dog has had too much bread?

If a dog has eaten too much bread, they may show signs of digestive discomfort or other symptoms. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Upset stomach: vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
  • Bloating or gas: bread can cause excessive gas or bloating, especially in smaller dogs.
  • Lethargy: too many carbs can make a dog feel sluggish or overly full.
  • Weight gain: regularly eating bread can lead to obesity over time.
  • Allergic reactions: if your dog is sensitive to wheat or gluten, they may experience itching, skin irritation, or ear infections.
  • Increased thirst: bread with too much salt can make your dog excessively thirsty.

If your dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding them bread and contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist or worsen, especially if your dog ate toxic ingredients like raisins, garlic or xylitol.

How often can dogs eat bread

Dogs can eat bread occasionally, but it should be considered a treat rather than a regular part of their diet. Depending on your dog’s size, health, and activity level, offering bread 1–2 times a week is usually a safe frequency.

As with any treat, moderation is key. Plain or Whole Wheat Bread should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.

How to feed your dog bread

If you want to share some bread with your pup, follow these steps to keep it safe and healthy:

  1. Choose the right bread: homemade bread is the safer option if you know what’s inside. Otherwise, plain white or whole wheat bread with no added sugars, spices, or artificial ingredients.
  2. Avoid harmful ingredients: make sure the bread does not contain raisins, garlic, onions, nuts (especially macadamia), chocolate, xylitol, salt or butter.
  3. Offer small portions as a treat: give your dog a small amount (e.g., a thumbnail size for small dogs, half a slice for medium dogs, no more than 1 slice for larger dogs) no more than once or twice a week.
  4. Start slow: if your dog is new to bread, start by offering a small amount and see how they react. Monitor them for any signs of digestive upset or allergies, like vomiting, diarrhea, or itching.

However, if you doggo’s showing puppy eyes while you’re eating bread, you can always redirect their attention with healthier snack alternatives like carrots, apples or plain cooked chicken.
